    I work with pipeline integrity and the various ILI tools that are available around the globe. This is currently an interesting area of NDE due to challenges facing the industry with thicker walls and the need to address areas traditionally considered ‘non piggable’. Crack detection ILI tools have improve ddramatically in recnet years but still have significant challenge sin terms of orienttaion, wall thickness range and the detection threshold. Would be pleased to engage in dialog on this topic. If you are also interetsed you should investigate the Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) website who have and continue to evaluate pipeline ILI technologies.

    it’s important to know – at least- this kind of information. 1) grade of stainless steel ( i.e. martensitic or PH martensitic )- 2) autogenous welding or welding by filler 3) which kind of filler 4) kind of welding and its geometry . These are minimum info in order to understand which kind o PWHT have to be applied.
    Considering that there is a dilution in FZ between a carbon steel such as S355 and martensitic SS or PH , HAZ could cause some risk of stress cracks due to martensitc or retained austenit tranformation . This could involved not only the kind of PWHT but -in addition- the choice of NDT method in terms of UT and MT parameters. Therefore, more info about welding process could be useful in order to give you some suggestion

    NOVOTEST UCI hardness testers measure the hardness of metal from 1 mm thick without additional manipulations, and also a thinner material can be measured with a special stand. This effect is achieved through some technological features of the probe (the principle of excitation of ultrasonic vibrations, the geometry of the indenter, etc.).

    With regard to 1/3rd the price of German made devices, there are some obvious factors – such as labor costs in Ukraine, as well as other factors – production in large quantities, which significantly reduces unit costs, low margins of sellers, etc.

    The company NOVOTEST has been producing UCI hardness testers for about 10 years, and a lot of effort has been made to get such a high-quality product with an acceptable price. And, by the way, the final testing of software for Android is now in process, which will allow full implementation of operation on the smartphone via bluetooth, now it will be available with the T-UD3 series devices, and in the near future, the company will release UCI probes without an electronic unit with direct connection to the smartphone.

    I am a little confused because I want to work in this area using FE in 3D models. My questions are:
    a) does anyone know if there are some reasons for not employing FE to simulate ultrasound propagation (e.g. inability of FE to model such problems, more disadvantages than advantages. etc.)?
    b) Are there more papers in the literature than I have found?
    c) Ultrasound excitation (in contact application) should be regarded as a force boundary condition or prescribed displacement at the transducer/medium interface (my opinion is the former case).

    Simple things to try
    1. Move or Shield the power to the motor – make sure the motor wires are not less than 10cm from the probe connections. Check grounding etc. – Thry linking the probe body to the motor case. If its already joined try disconnecting it (These things are seldom rational until you’ve solved them)
    2. Put some capacitors across the motor contacts – 0.1 uF low impedance type should reduce most spikes. Wrap the power leads round a toroid or use series inductors
    3. Move the motor – Drive the mechanism via a belt and pulleys (Usually necessary anyway to keep the motor out of the water)
    4. Make Sure the motor power supply is not contributing – Some switched mode power supplies can kick out a lot of noise.- Do you get spikes when the voltage is reduced and the motor not turning? If so its not the motor…

    If the threaded connection in question is to be tested under DS1/NS2 spec then fluorescent MPI Inspection is the reccomended test method, under the same spec it also gives accept/ reject criteria for thread pitting.

  • DR is better for field operation only in meaning of small thickness of plate but CR is better in SW and resolution…
    Computer Radiography IS one kind of Digital industrial Radiology, The other type is digital radiography using digital detector arrays (DDAs)

    The secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) analysis is destructive technique (sacrifices the surface particles that are analyzed by the mass spectrometer) for analyzing the mass/charge ratio of ionized particles produced from the sample upon bombardment of an energetic (25 keV) primary ion beam (Bi+, Cs+, C60+).

    Laminations are typically nothing more than a squashed bubble in the material. I’m assuming since your pipe is 60″ Diameter that it is seamed pipe formed from rolled plate and not extruded. The plate forming process is what turns a bubble in an ingot into a lamination. Also why they are commonly at a depth of half the thickness of the material.

    I think if you are unable to find this information then you are not going to be able to function as a Level 3 PCN.

    In my experience of Level 3 it is also a big part of finding the relevant information in codes and standards from research if it is something out of the ordinary.

    If you do intend to study it then make sure it is for the correct reasons and that you satisfy the docs from PCN which you should start from PCN/GEN. I once heard about a guy at a test centre who sat his exam and the examiner refused to mark it as he is nowhere near the Level 3 standard despite being ticking the boxes. He is not a level 3.

    I would recommend that you do not do it. Just an opinion.

    If the existing cathodic protection system is adequate, it should easily protect the portion of pipeline in the water as water is less resistive than soil. However, you might consider installing a permanent reference electrode in this location for occasional measurement.
    I believe however that the biggest risk will likely be possible crevice corrosion at the tape to paint interface.
    A very diligent visual inspection procedure should be established to insure the exterior of the pipeline remains corrosion free.

    How did you come up with the length for that height defect? I am not sure how this “interpolation” is determined.
    Explain how linear interpolation works. I have never heard of it. You sound like you want to re-engineer the ECA criteria on the job. If you want to change the ECA you should become an engineer and crunch numbers for a pipeline company.
    The AUT operators don’t really give a shit about it. If it passes it passes,if it doesn’t it doesn’t.

    Its good to know that you worked for ISRO. If you would like to acquire certification in aerospace sector , you shall be an employee of the AEROSPACE company which is certified to NAS.

    (I can recommend AE analyzers from Czech company Dakel.cz that we use in our lab during nano/micro – tribological/mechanical experiments. We need to sense very low-energy signals so we were looking for analyzers featuring the lowest-possible noise. Dakel.cz also manufactures AE sensors and they have designed a few optimally shaped and tuned for our needs. High flexibility in both hardware design and various software optimizations is a great differentiator of that small Czech company comparing to other vendors. Their support of our efforts was outstanding.
    I know Dakel provides AE equipment for classic NDT AE methods including large-scale installations in nuclear power plants. They also do training and certifications of personnel in AE diagnostics.)
