NDT Inspect (admin) replied to the discussion Is there ever a completely perfect metal production without flaws?8 hours agoIn practice, no. Every metal production process, whether casting, forging, rolling, welding, or additive manufacturing, introduces some level of discontinuity. The goal isn't a flawless product but one where any discontinuities present are below the size, type, and location that would affect the…

Mark Gilmour posted an update2 days agoPreparing for an NDT exam, or starting your apprenticeship?
(edited)
Don’t just memorise the answer. Build your understanding of why it’s right.
I developed NDT Pro Study Plus from my own revision notes and experience helping apprentices, to give learners a practical way to revise and check their understanding.
With NDT Pro Study Plus, you can explore illustrated theory, 755 explained practice questions, 69 structured theory sections and timed practice exams across UT, MT, PT, RT, ET, and Visual Testing with Welding Inspection.
Whether you’re building your foundations or revisiting a difficult topic, the aim is understanding, not simply remembering answers. It’s an independent revision aid to support formal training and practical experience, not replace them.
Try the free preview and see whether it suits your learning. Full-library access is subscription-based.
Know an apprentice or someone preparing for their next NDT exam? Please pass this on.

Mark Gilmour posted an update in the group Radiography5 days agoA visible IQI wire tells you something important, but not everything.
In a simplified wire-to-thickness example, a 0.20 mm IQI wire is visible through 10 mm of material.
What percentage ratio is that?
More importantly, does it guarantee that every 0.20 mm crack would also be detected?
My explanation is below. This is a principle question, not a complete code-compliance assessment.
Answer: 2%.
(0.20 ÷ 10) × 100 = 2%
But no, that does not guarantee detection of every crack of a comparable size. An IQI is an image-quality reference, not a universal minimum-defect-size guarantee.
Crack orientation, the radiation path through the discontinuity and image contrast affect detectability. The applicable technique, IQI selection and acceptance requirements still need to be met.
