    Three Modes of Failure:

    (a) Failure by elastic deflection. (b) Failure by general yielding. Failure by elastic deflection: In applications like transmission shaft supporting gears, the maximum force acting on the shaft, without affecting its performance, is limited by the permissible elastic deflection.
