    hi! has anyone inspected the oil or gas welded pipe which is in service? I want to know that whether oil or gas in the pipe will influence with UT inspection result, especially for the weld root? because according to the theory, liquid oil or gas in the pipe will aborb some acoustic energy, so it will cause the root defect can’t be found.

    No, you can differentiate the signals. There is no chances of disappearing the signal but lesser the amplitude you cause with. you should compensate the loss of energy by adding some gain. The amount of gain you add depends on the fuel flow inside the pipe which is complex to calculate. Better add some dB based on the usual repeated signal from the active pipe.
