Ultrasonic flaw detection across a water gap
Ultrasonic flaw detection across a water gap
Abstract: It is difficult to detect cracks in the root area of the welding seam of the control rod nozzle installed on the reactor pressure vessel cover because of the limited accessibility. For ultrasonic testing, probe coupling can only be performed on the inner surface of the engine rod duct. In addition, there is a water gap of 2 to 3 mm between the pipe and the control rod nozzle. An investigation was conducted to find the ultrasonic detection parameters for crack detection across the water gap. Ultrasonic measurements across the water gap are performed on samples with flat, convex and concave surfaces. The material of the sample with curved surface is Inconel 625. For measurement, the probe is coupled to the surface of the thin metal sheet. The arrangement of the surface of the plate and the sample makes it possible to place different water-filled gaps between the metal interface of the plate and the sample. Introduce test reflectors (spark corrosion notches) at different depths of the specimen. The notch has a different position and direction relative to the weld. After the test reflector is detected at the root of the weld, the size of the reflector is determined. In order to analyze the size of the reflector, measurements were taken, and then the data was post-processed with the help of reconstruction techniques using SAFT. The measurement and analysis results will be provided.
