Ultrasonic testing of railway axles from a borehole in axial direction
Ultrasonic testing of railway axles from a borehole in axial direction
An ultrasonic phased array technology has been developed to detect cracks on the surface of railway axles with small axial holes. Modeling calculations are used to obtain appropriate probe parameters for coupling on the inner surface of the concave surface. The effect of different probe parameters on the sound field propagation and the sound field sensitivity associated with crack detection will be shown. The phased array probe is manufactured as a prototype. A mechanical probe guiding device was developed to introduce the phased array probe into the borehole and manipulate the probe to detect cracks on the surface of the outer shaft in the circumferential direction. The measured data is used to reconstruct the image, and the results are presented in the form of echo tomograms, showing the location of the defect at the outer circumference of the shaft.
