Penetrant process timeline
A liquid penetrant examination is a fixed sequence of steps, and every one of them takes time that cannot be compressed without changing the result. Pre-clean and dry, apply penetrant, dwell, remove, dry, develop, dwell, interpret, post-clean. The dwell steps dominate: penetrant filling a tight discontinuity and penetrant bleeding back out of it are both diffusion-limited processes governed by capillary pressure against viscous drag, and neither runs faster because the job is behind schedule.
Laying the sequence out end to end is what turns a set of code minimums into a plan. It shows the earliest interpretation point – the moment the developer dwell is satisfied and indications may legitimately be read – and it shows what the examination actually costs in shift time. For a typical weld examination the total is around an hour per part processed serially, of which more than a third is dwell during which nothing visible is happening.
Which steps apply depends on the removal method. Water washable (Method A) goes straight from dwell to rinse. Post-emulsifiable systems (Methods B and D) add an emulsification step, and hydrophilic removal adds a pre-rinse before it. Solvent removable (Method C) replaces the rinse with a controlled wipe and often needs no forced drying at all.
The throughput figures assume strictly serial processing of one part. On a line where several parts are in different steps at once the elapsed time per part is unchanged – each part still takes the full cycle – but the station occupancy is what limits the rate, and the longest single step becomes the bottleneck.

A post-emulsifiable examination. Removal = 1 min pre-rinse + 2 min emulsification + 1 min rinse = 4 min. Time to the earliest interpretation = 5 pre-clean + 10 pre-dry + 10 penetrant dwell + 4 removal + 10 dry + 1 developer application + 10 developer dwell = 50 min. Adding 5 min interpretation and 5 min post-clean gives 60 min total, exactly 1 h, so 1 part per hour or 8 per 8 h shift processed serially. The two dwell steps alone account for 20 of those 60 minutes. Under Method A the pre-rinse and emulsification drop out and the total falls to 57 min.
