Developer dwell time

Developer is a fine, highly porous powder layer laid over the cleaned surface. Its pores are much smaller than the discontinuity opening, so capillary action now works in reverse: the penetrant trapped in the flaw is drawn out into the coating. The powder also spreads the emerging penetrant sideways, so a crack a few micrometres wide produces an indication a hundred times wider and becomes visible, and it provides a white background that raises contrast for visible dye.

Developer dwell is the time that blotting needs. Too short and only the most open discontinuities have bled out, so tight cracks are missed. Too long and the bleed-out keeps spreading until fine indications blur into broad diffuse marks that cannot be sized or characterised, and until the developer starts to lift background penetrant from the surface film.

Because the amount of penetrant available to bleed back is roughly proportional to how long the penetrant was allowed to fill, developer dwell is tied to penetrant dwell: the accepted window is half to twice the penetrant dwell, and never less than 10 minutes. Interpretation is made inside that window – ASME V requires final interpretation not less than 10 min and not more than 60 min after developing is complete, with longer periods permitted if bleed-out has not altered the result.

Timing starts when the developer has dried on the part, not when it was sprayed. A wet aqueous developer that is still damp has not begun blotting, and any indication seen before it dries is not a valid interpretation.

A 30 min penetrant dwell was applied to a weld. Half the penetrant dwell is 15 min, which exceeds the 10 min floor, so the minimum developer dwell is 15 min. The maximum is 2 x 30 = 60 min. Matching the developer dwell to the penetrant dwell gives 30 min, comfortably inside the window. Final interpretation is made between 10 and 60 min after the developer has dried.
