Group Description
Welcome to [NDT Inspection Portal]’s time of flight diffraction (ToFD) group, a place for professionals to connect and discuss the latest techniques and technologies in time of flight diffraction inspection.
ToFD is a non-destructive testing method that uses ultrasonic waves to inspect the condition of components such as pipelines, tanks, and pressure vessels. It is a specialized form of ultrasonic inspection that involves the use of specialized probes to transmit and receive ultrasonic waves, which are then analyzed to detect flaws, defects, or other abnormalities within the component. Our member group offers a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices on ToFD and its applications in various industries. Join our community of experts from around the world and be a part of the conversation on advancing the practice of time of flight diffraction inspection.
Reply To: Indications of TOFD on HDPE – Termofusion or Material?
firstly, the reason that ASTM EE3044 does not require the mode-converted time interval is because the shear mode is about 35dB lower than the P-mode so its amplitude will be insignificant.
Both the preparation of the fusion surface and the material content could be sources of the indications. The contact surfaces of the pipe should be clean and dry. But it is also possible that there are inclusions in the HDPE pipe. A common source is unmixed carbon-black. Perhaps you could examine the chip under a microscope to see if you ca identify any impurities in the void.
