Defect sizing using PA-ultrasonic testing and acceptance in copper lids, tubes and welds for disposal canister<div>

Abstract: Posiva Oy will be responsible for processing spent nuclear fuel processing tanks. The spent fuel from Fortum Oyj’s Loviisa nuclear power plant and TVO Oyj’s Olkiluoto plant will be stored at the same disposal site in Olkiluoto. The treatment tank components are ductile iron inserts that provide strength and fracture toughness, and the copper tubes and lids provide corrosion protection. The tank will be sealed by electron beam welding or friction stir welding. Posiva Oy has applied and developed a variety of non-destructive testing methods to ensure the quality of copper parts and sealing welds. The phased array ultrasonic testing technology for the copper parts and welds of disposal tanks is introduced. You can use PASAFT or matrix PA for more advanced ultrasonic evaluations. These two methods are also discussed to evaluate these components. The evaluation of indications is a difficult task to determine the size, and it is also the basis for correct acceptance. The defects inspected are related to the different manufacturing methods of the defects. The type of defect forms the basis of the non-destructive testing design, because the type of defect that appears in the tested component will affect the choice of testing method. The results of other non-destructive testing methods (ET, RT and VT) will also be used to guide the size determination of different areas of the component. Some UT results will be compared with radiographic results. Due to anisotropy, the actual detection of copper materials is challenging…
