About this equipment

High-voltage DC holiday detector from Elcometer, available from the rental fleet of Advanced Test Equipment Corp. (ATEC) in San Diego. It is used to find pinholes and porosity in protective coatings on pipelines and other coated steel by detecting a spark where the coating is breached. A built-in calculator sets the test voltage from the coating thickness, an internal voltmeter confirms the output, and lights on the handle plus a buzzer flag each fault. The maximum voltage depends on the handle fitted: 5, 15 or 30 kV DC. The packing list covers the gauge, battery and charger, handle cable, 10 m return lead, brush, strap and carry case.
