Chris posted an update in the group Phased Array Ultrasonics (PAUT)2 years agoAmine Service Cracking in Heat-Affected Zone
This image from Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) showcases the detection of amine service cracking in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) adjacent to a weld. Unlike common weld cracks, these are specifically due to the corrosive effects of amine solutions in the HAZ. The PAUT image reveals linear indications characteristic of stress corrosion cracking that occurs in environments involving amine-based chemicals. This type of cracking is particularly concerning because it can compromise the integrity of the structure in areas not typically subjected to the same scrutiny as welds themselves. This finding highlights the importance of inspecting the HAZ in amine service environments for early detection and prevention of such defects.

I have been asked this question many times. Below is an example of one guy asking this question.
What do you think about NDT carrer and would you go different path if you had an option?
Hi all,
I graduated in 2017 with a BENG in Mechanical Engineering, since then I have worked in finance as it was the first job I was able to get out of university. I’m 26 and I have realised that life is too short to waste years on a career in something I’m not passionate about. I heard about NDT whilst exploring jobs that would allow me to use my degree and eventually go down the rope access route.
It would be great to hear some opinions on:
Would my degree be useful in an NDT career?
Would NDT allow for travelling/working abroad?
What kind of salary would you expect for someone at entry level up through level 1, 2 and 3?
Does NDT work require you to be away from home for long periods of time?
What does a typical day in the life of an NDT technician consist of?
Any other advice or pointers would be much appreciated.
Thanks

chris started the discussion MPI for inspecting the inside diameter of tubes for transverse oriented defects in the forum MPI5 years agoDear Experts,
How to inspect the inside diameter of ferromagnetic heavy wall pipes or API Casing hanger tubes by Magnetic particle testing for defects oriented in transverse direction.
Transverse defects at OD can be covered by coil shot/flexible cable wrap units by employing longitudinal magnetization technique.
Longitudinal defects at ID can be detected by central conductor technique by circular magnetization and some extent at OD by using high current.
Is there any effective way to detect transverse defects at ID of pipe?
Thanks -
I would like to ask if anybody know how i may apply Dynamic Depth Focusing (DDF) in the Omniscan MX2?
Does it possible with the MX2 unit or we need to use another unit in order to apply this technique?
Thanks👍2 1 comment
noizyboyFor dynamic focusing in depth, the simplest version of TomoView is enough, or you can purchase only the Advanced Phased Array Calculator.
Please also note that dynamic focusing is not required for most ultrasonic scanning tasks. It is enough to create several groups (sounding schemes) with focusing at different depths (or on different parts of the weld) -
Hi every professional NDT engineer,
I have not the experience for PAUT on casting structures/welds, as you know that casting surface is not eveness, so always lose data, or the sensitivity level. I suppose the hydroform probe is good choice, but I did not find out this kind of probe from OLYMPUS, it will be great if you can share your precious experience. thanks a lot!👍1 -
chris started the discussion PAUT Scanning plan for welding joint ISO13588 in the forum Phased Array5 years agoHi Everyone,
my question is scanning plan for welding joint according to ISO13588:2019.
please read uploaded table 2 of ISO 13588, in this table, only single V type joint is stipulated, no cases for doube V, or "K" joint, and no description for cases with thick plate.
I hope the perfect one is annex A of ISO17640.
so the problem is nothing to follow, could you (everyone experienced master) share something, so that new guy like me could find the way?
thanks a lot here.👍2 -
